Liam Bourke is a Professor of Cancer Research, heart attack survivor and health education specialist

"Pioneering Research"
  • Liam Bourke is an award-winning Professor of Cancer Research with a long track record of design, development, and evaluation of complex interventions for improving the health of people with cancer.

His research findings and scientific papers have been published in world-leading research and medical journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, The British Medical Journal, The Cochrane Database, European Urology and several more.

As a trained physiologist and completing his first post-doctoral position in cardiovascular science, he has been working in R&D in partnership with the NHS to improve the lives of people living with cancer and other long-term conditions, for nearly 2 decades.

  • His life took an unexpected turn in November 2024 when the chest infection he thought he was suffering from was diagnosed as a heart attack. Four stents, 5 admissions to hospital, 10 kg lighter and many months of rehab later, he is back to work and more determined than ever to help people.

He believes that education and self-empowerment can make a substantial difference in how chronic disease impacts all of our lives.

  • Liam offers specialist workshops that address peoples concerns and questions about the health issues that affect us all.

He works with people to produce their own tailored action plans that will develop their knowledge and skills but also offer concrete steps to helping people live the life they really want without having their circumstances dictate what they can achieve.

“Liam's sessions were expertly crafted, pitched at the right level and we received lots of positive feedback across disciplines.”

Professor Gareth Griffiths (University of Southampton)

“Liam has consistently demonstrated how much he values patient perspective, and for this he has already been rewarded with high quality research and results. I’m delighted he’s now been awarded the Patient Involvement in Research Prize. This commitment to including the patient voice has been evident throughout Liam’s career. He’s facilitated workshops and spoken to the media about the importance of this patient-centric way of designing research.”
